Botox Injection Sites: Where Can You Get Botox Injections Done?

Aging is inevitable, and with it come signs of aging. For your face, this can include wrinkles and fine lines. Some have learned to live with looking older than they really are, but thanks to the innovations of cosmetic treatments, you can take back your youth and reduce these signs of aging.

So where can you get Botox injections done? You can get Botox on glabellar lines, crow’s feet, horizontal forehead wrinkles, bunny lines, lip lines, and marionette lines. These are among the most common wrinkles that can develop on your face, and as long as it’s caused by muscle movement, Botox can help treat it.

Cosmetic Treatment Areas for Botox Injections

Botox reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles by freezing the muscles that, when flexed, cause the skin attached to it to fold and crease. By freezing these specific muscles, your skin will stop being creased, which can help it smoothen and soften over time.

These facial muscle movements cause several common types of wrinkles. Here are some of the different types of wrinkles created by muscle movement and the target muscle that’s treated for these wrinkles. If you’re interested to learn more about the different kinds of wrinkles we can treat, schedule a consultation with Dr. V Medical Aesthetics to talk to an experienced Botox provider.

Glabellar Lines

Average amount of Botox units used: 20 units

More commonly known as frown lines, these are the vertical forehead lines that appear on your glabella – the skin between your eyebrows on your forehead. This is the most common facial wrinkle that Botox and other botulinum toxin injection products can treat. Your glabellar lines can sometimes develop with or without horizontal forehead lines above it.

The procerus and corrugator supercilii muscles are two of the muscles that can cause glabellar lines. Your Botox provider can freeze these muscles to prevent drastic muscle movement that can crease your glabella and cause it to fold vertically.

Contrary to its name, frown lines aren’t caused by frowning alone. Smiling, laughing, and any other facial expression that causes you to move these muscles can result in frown lines. Actions like raising your eyebrows or narrowing your eyes can also be a common cause for glabellar lines.

Crow’s Feet

Average amount of Botox units used: 12 units per eye, 24 units total

Crow’s feet (or its medical term, lateral canthal lines) are the wrinkles that appear on the outer corners of your eyes. They’re also known as smile lines, but just like frown lines, smiling isn’t the sole cause of these wrinkles.

If you’re getting Botox to treat crow’s feet, you’re likely to receive injections on your lateral orbicularis oculi muscles on either side of your face. This can freeze your facial muscles from doing facial expressions and actions that involve squinting and folding the skin on the outer sides of your eyes.

Many facial expressions and facial movements trigger muscles around the eye area. The creases are evident when you’re smiling wide and grinning, but repeated squinting when you read or look at something can also cause repetitive muscle movement that can gradually develop crow’s feet.

Horizontal Forehead Wrinkles

Average amount of Botox units used: 20 units, 4 units for 5 injection sites on the forehead

These forehead wrinkles are different from frown lines. While frown lines are vertical and limited to the glabellar area between your eyebrows, horizontal forehead wrinkles can appear across your forehead. These can be very noticeable because of their width

Horizontal forehead wrinkles are caused by the frontalis muscle, the large muscle behind your forehead. Because of its size, your provider may have to distribute the Botox units evenly across various injection sites on the forehead to completely freeze your forehead muscle from creasing your skin. It may also be necessary to freeze certain areas like your eyebrow muscles, since these can indirectly cause your forehead muscles to bunch up in the process.

Forehead wrinkles can be caused by a number of things, including facial expressions. Because your forehead muscles are adjacent to your glabellar and eyebrows, movement from these areas can also affect movement on your forehead.

Bunny Lines

Average amount of Botox units used: 2 units per side, 4 units total

Bunny lines can develop on either side of your nose close to the inner corners of your eyes. It commonly occurs when you wrinkle your nose, though it can also be indirectly caused by the same muscles that cause frown lines just above it.

During Botox treatments for bunny lines, your provider will inject units of Botox onto the nasalis muscle, which is responsible for wrinkling your nose. For best results, your provider may recommend getting Botox cosmetic injections for glabellar lines, since the procerus muscle can also push downwards and cause folding along the nasalis muscle.

You’re likely to wrinkle your nose when making certain facial expressions or reactions, like when you smell something bad. Squinting or frowning can also cause the skin in the area to fold, causing repeated creasing that can lead to bunny lines.

Lip Lines

Average amount of Botox units used: 10 units for one lip, 20 units total

Sometimes called lipstick lines or smoker’s lines, lip wrinkles are the vertical lines that can form around your lips. These are different from marionette lines, as marionette lines are vertical lines that form from your mouth to your chin. These are more common in older adults and are more difficult to conceal because of their prominence on your lips.

During a Botox procedure for lip lines, your provider will inject the orbicularis oris muscles on both your upper and lower lips.

The most common cause of lip lines is smoking. When you pucker your lips to smoke, you’re creasing the skin around your lips and developing vertical lines around the area. Lip wrinkles can also be caused by repetitive muscle movements like pursing your lips or drinking through straws.

Marionette Lines

Average amount of Botox units used: up to 20 units on each side, 40 units total

Marionette lines also occur around your mouth, but these are different from lip wrinkles. While lip wrinkles are vertical lines around your lips, marionette lines are two deep lines that start on both corners of your mouth and down to your chin. These prominent lines can pull your mouth corners down and give you the appearance similar to that of a puppet’s mouth.

The muscle responsible for this is the depressor anguli oris muscle. This can minimize the depth of your lines and soften your appearance. This can be caused by certain mouth movements like frowning, which can crease the corners of your lips downwards.

How Many Units Do I Need for Each Type of Wrinkle?

Young woman after receiving botox

While there’s a typical average number of units for each wrinkle, how much you’ll exactly need for a certain type of wrinkle can vary between patients. It’s best to schedule a consultation with a trusted aesthetic practitioner to get a more accurate estimate. For best results, skilled Botox providers consider a number of factors on how many units are necessary to inject into certain wrinkles. Some factors to consider include:

  • Age
  • Weight
  • Lifestyle habits
  • Medical history
  • The treatment area (thicker facial muscles require higher doses)
  • If you have a history with Botox or any other botulinum toxin product

Too little, and the procedure may not be effective enough to completely freeze your muscles. Too much, and you could end up with an unnaturally frozen appearance or have Botox leak onto adjacent muscles. The goal is to use as little as Botox as necessary to achieve your desired look. Not all providers have mastered this, so it’s best to get your Botox from a licensed medical professional with experience in cosmetic Botox treatments.

Can Botox Treat All Types of Wrinkles?

Botox is effective for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. However, it can only treat certain types of wrinkles like the ones mentioned earlier that are associated with muscle movement.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

There are 2 types of facial wrinkles: dynamic wrinkles and static wrinkles. When you’re younger, your skin contains a healthy amount of collagen and elastin that keep your skin elastic and taut. Any external element that causes your skin to crease doesn’t leave a significant effect on it. As you get older, your skin has less of these substances, making it more difficult for your skin to spring back without leaving some kind of marking.

Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Moving your facial muscles is inevitable throughout the day, so you’re likely to constantly crease your skin many times daily. Over time, this can take a toll on your skin as the folds and creases start to leave permanent lines on your skin.

If these fine lines aren’t treated, they can eventually become deeper and more prominent facial wrinkles. These are the types of wrinkles that Botox and any other botulinum toxin product can treat.

Static wrinkles, on the other hand, are those caused by a combination of gravity, sun damage, and other external factors. These factors can either age skin, which can cause you to lose healthy skin nutrients and substances faster, or can cause your skin to eventually sag, resulting in folds.

Unfortunately, Botox isn’t effective against static wrinkles since they’re not caused by muscle movement. If you want to get cosmetic treatment for both static and dynamic wrinkles, schedule a consultation with us. We can provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that can tackle all the signs of aging on your face.

How Botox Works

Botox and other botulinum toxin injection products like Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are safe wrinkle treatments that work by freezing muscles. Botox’s active ingredient is onabotulinumtoxin A, a commercially processed form of botulinum toxin that originates from C. botulinum bacteria. Botox is used as an intramuscular injection to administer the toxin into the treated muscle.

When your muscles contract, your nerves release acetylcholine to connect the neuromuscular junction with the target muscle and cause it to move. Botox neurotoxins disrupt the nerve signaling process by blocking this process. This process temporarily freezes your muscles from moving. In turn, this stops instances of skin creasing and reduces the appearance of deep wrinkles and fine lines.

Ways You Develop Severe Wrinkles

Wrinkles are an unavoidable part of aging. As your skin loses nutrients and other substances that keep it elastic and bouncy, it no longer has the ability to maintain its healthiest form. Some of the ways you can develop prominent wrinkles include the following causes:

  • Repeated facial expressions and muscle movement. Showing emotion and doing anything that requires moving your muscles can eventually lead to wrinkles. It’s virtually impossible to avoid this, but you can take treatments like Botox cosmetic injections to manage the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Age. Growing older reduces the amount of collagen, elastin, sebum, and other naturally-occurring substances that keep your skin healthy. As a result, your skin loses its youthful appearance and appears more wrinkled.
  • Loss of facial fat. As you grow older, you lose more fat around your face, resulting in a reduced facial volume. Not only can the reduced volume make you look older, but the lost volume can cause saggy skin that can form lines. Although Botox can’t treat this, other cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers can restore your facial volume.
  • UV damage or sun damage. Ultraviolet radiation and prolonged sun exposure can speed up your skin’s aging process, which can result in wrinkling if you aren’t taking steps to avoid sun exposure or care for your skin.
  • Smoking. Smoking can speed up your skin’s aging process by affecting your body’s natural collagen production. Frequently puckering your lips to smoke can also develop smile lines.

Botox can help minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles caused by muscle movement. But for other wrinkles and fine lines, you may need additional cosmetic treatments to reduce their appearance. Schedule a consultation at Dr. V Medical Aesthetics and we can discuss more about dermal fillers, injectable treatments, and other minimally-invasive procedures that can help address other signs of aging.

Other Uses for Botox

Botox can also be used for a number of medical treatments aside from your facial muscles. Botox is one of the FDA-approved botulinum toxin products that can treat the following:

  • Excess Sweating. Also known as hyperhidrosis, this is when one specific area of your body or your multiple areas sweat more than usual. It is not a life-threatening condition, but it can be uncomfortable. Botox can treat this by blocking the nerves responsible for triggering sweat glands in a specific area.
  • Neck pain, shoulder pain, and muscle spasms. Muscle spasms are caused by nerve disorders that can trigger unwanted muscle movement. This commonly appears as neck pain, shoulder pain, or upper limb spasticity. Botox can act as a muscle relaxant by blocking these nerve signals and reducing episodes of muscle twitching. Anyone older than 2 years old can receive Botox treatments for this condition.
  • Eyelid twitching. One of the causes of eyelid twitching is muscle overstimulation or spasms from nerve cells. If your eyelid twitching is caused by this or other conditions like blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm, Botox can be a good option to control your muscles. Effects can last around three months before needing maintenance treatment.
  • Crossed eyes. The medical condition that causes crossed eyes, strabismus, can be treated with Botox injections. If the cause of your condition is due to a muscle around your eye, a doctor can inject Botox to weaken that muscle and align your eyes.  However, you need to be at least 12 years old to receive these treatments.
  • Migraine prevention. Your doctor can recommend this if you experience headaches that last several hours for more than half a month. Botox blocks neurotransmitters that deliver pain signals. By injecting certain areas in your head with Botox, the toxin can block the nerve endings and reduce the pain.
  • Overactive bladder. Having an overactive bladder is a symptom of an underlying condition like urinary incontinence, lower urinary tract infections, and dysfunctions caused by nerve disorders. Botox is administered into your bladder muscles via a catheter. This is usually an option after all other medical therapy options have been exhausted. Patients who receive Botox treatments report less frequent urinary incontinence episodes.
